In December 2010 Deborah set up DJH international tax, a business that offers a range of services using all the skills developed over a career in tax spanning more than 30 years.
Deborah worked with two of the Big 4 accounting firms in the early part of her tax career, in both UK and US tax, mainly for individuals. Within the legal profession she worked with what is now one of the world’s leading law firms handling the tax affairs of high net worth individuals and trusts as well as spending time in the firm’s private client department.
Within industry she worked in the tax department of a US-owned international film distributor, where her interest in the international tax area developed.
Deborah’s publishing career began with Tolley (now part of Lexis Nexis). She joined as an editor working on the well known Tolley Tax Annuals, still a vital part of the tax practitioner’s tools. She had a spell as Features Editor on Taxation magazine, where she also launched its international supplement. Deborah then spent several years working in the company’s newsletters and conferences division, where she developed a range of new publications. This development role expanded into the book and subscription publishing area prior to Tolley’s acquisition by Lexis Nexis.
Deborah joined BNA International in 1997 rising to the role of Publishing Director, where she was responsible for managing and developing all of BNA International’s publishing activities.
In September 1999 she took responsibility for managing the project to make available online all of BNA International’s publications and subsequently created and developed the company’s first online-only product.
In 2008 Deborah added responsibility for managing and growing the company’s conference activity and in March that year took over the training programme acquired when BNA International purchased the European American Tax Institute.
With effect from January 2009 Deborah relinquished her publishing responsibilities and took over management of the European American Tax Institute as a division of BNA International, with responsibility for marketing and sales activity, managing the Institute’s membership structure and activities as well as developing the training and conference programme.
Deborah served as Secretary on the committee of the European branch of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, the UK’s professional body for tax practitioners for over 15 years. During that time she organised or co-organised many of the branch’s technical meetings in both the UK and across Europe, introducing new locations such as Milan and Geneva where successful annual meetings were held for several years.
Deborah has been a keen exponent of the CIOT’s ADIT programme, introducing a dedicated training programme to prepare students for the full range of papers during her time at EATI. Courses to prepare students for ADIT are now a key element of DJH international tax. In 2011 Deborah co-ordinated the development of the transfer pricing paper and certificate which has proved to be one of the most successful elements of ADIT.
